4th of July

Eric and I went back to Vashon for 4th of July this year. We got a chance to see so many people that we haven't seen in such a long time. Of course we went to the Hydros in the morning. Then in the afternoon we went to a BBQ at the Berdice house. And let me tell you, it was some BBQ. They rent a BBQ that was made out of a semi. I am not sure where they got it, but it was cool. I know Dean is jealous right now. I had the grill on the back and a table. And the fuel tank on the side was a cooler. It was pretty cool. We had a great time there. Then when it started to get dark, we made our way down closer to the fireworks. We watched them from a house right above the harbor where the barge was with the fireworks on it. This year was kind of a special fireworks show. It was announced that this was the last year that Tom Stewart would pay for the fireworks. So this year was twice as big as it usually was. By the end of the night we were exhausted. But it was a lot of fun.

Hydros

Yet again this year's Hydro were eventful. For those of you that have never heard of the Hydros, I will explain. Every year on 4th of July at the crack of dawn Hydros race around Vashon. When I say Hydros, I do not mean the Hydros that race at Seafair. These are local Vashon people that work on their own Hydros. Usually they only race them on this one day of the year. The race starts at Jenson Point in the inner harbor of Vashon. A bunch of people watch from Jenson Point or from their boats. For the last couple of years Eric has been helping start the Hydros. He puts on his hip waiters and holds the boat up, or helps start the engine. Once all of the Hydros are launched the go out of the inner harbor towards Tacoma, and then race around the island and back into the inner harbor. At 5:30 AM they started to launch the boats. You could see thunder and lightening over the hills. You could tell it was going to be a difficult race. There have been a few races when none of the boats made it all the way around the island. In fact this year there was only one finisher. The water was so choppy that everyone else broke down before they even got half way around the island. But one person did make it. This year it was Kitt Selig. This was his first win. All in all it was a lot of fun.
