Home School Day 19

Day 19
The boys got a few assignments from their teachers today. Their art teacher asked them to do a color wheel of things they found from around their house. And also a design of things in a pattern that they found around the house as well. And Tommy's science teacher asked him to start studying a tree and make drawings of what it looks like right now. Then inspect it again in a couple weeks.

President Trump announced that if everyone stayed at home our best case scenario looks like 100,000 to 240,000 Americans could die. It is hard to even think that it could be real.

Home School Day 18

Day 18
The boys had fun with their how to draw day. They also spent time with dad outside burning stuff. Their favorite.

Work got a bit crazy yesterday and today. A flood of seminar cancellations and postponements. Ug.

Vashon has reported their second case of COVID-19. The summer 2020 Olympics have been postponed to 2021 :(

Home School Day 16

Day 6
Today for science we did the new snap circuits that Tommy got for his birthday. It was pretty cool. He made a light turn on, made a motor with a fan go. And he also made sound turn on.

Home School Day 15

Day 15

Jake's Kindergarten class started a marco polo group so the kids could post messages to each other. It has a voice filter. We were dying after we heard the macho voice filter.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has tested positive for COVID-19.

Home School Day 14

Day 14

The boys first day of making collages was very interesting. I had to show them some examples because they had never done one before.

Would have been opening day for the Mariners today. Sad to think about it. But they replayed Felix's no hitter on their website, and are starting up a classic game a night on tv.

Home School Day 13

Day 13

The boys made some very interesting paintings today at art time.

Today the first case of a Vashon resident with COVID-19 confirmed. Rumor is that there was an outbreak out the post office and a portion of the employees have been quarentined.

Home School Day 11

Day 11

The new schedule worked pretty well. Still looking for good game like apps for Tom to do on his level while Jake is doing work on the tablet. We did some hunting and pecking around. Still working on it.

The rest of the schedule went pretty well. I won't list it out because they followed the schedule almost exact. They liked having different a specific thing to do at each learning time and were looking forward to the activities coming up in the week.

I did have a meeting with Tommy's reading teacher today to go over things to be teaching Tommy while out of school. It went well. I had a fairly good idea of what to be teaching him, but got some extra tips.

We did have a little issue with Tommy's birthday balloon this evening. It popped and there was a melt down. He was crying because he said it was the best balloon ever because it looked like video games and said Epic on it. And it was his favorite color green. So I asked Eric to get a new one but he could only find an Star Wars balloon. It was not green or epic, but he was not disappointed.

Governor Inslee issued a stay at home order today except for non-essential functions.

Home School Day 10

Day 10
Apps - Jake - Monsters, Tom - Kahn Math
Activities - Lots of Cleaning. These boys are filthy pigs
Reading - Jake - BookRoom, Reading IQ
Recess - Gardening with Mom

This is what we get for stocking up on food. I found a hoard of wrappers under the boys bed and dresser. Apparently they had been stealing snacks and shoving the wrappers under there. They also found and stole the candy bag and ate all of it. Oh boy was I angry. I made Tom crawl under the bed and clean all of it out. And then I told them that if they left food and wrappers were left under the bed that rats would crawl under there and then crawl into their bed and eat their toes. Hopefully that scared them enough to never do it again.

New Home School Schedule

Today we are starting a new schedule. With a lot of my focus on work I need the boys to by more self sufficient. It was still a bit chaotic at times. There was a lot of I don't know what I am doing, or I am bored. So I made a schedule with more specific things to do and different things each day to rotate to hopefully keep them from getting bored. Jake is the calendar keep. Tommy is the time keeper and schedule reader. We'll see how it goes :)

Tommy's 8th Birthday

Tommy turned 8 today. It wasn't exactly the birthday he planned, but he still had a good birthday. We had planned for Tommy to get a birthday with lots of friends. We had a family baking class we gave our family as a gift for Christmas. So we had planned to have our baking class in the morning which came with learning different ways to decorate 40 cupcakes! And then afterward we would take them to Tommy's birthday party. Then COVID-19 started and we thought, OK we will just have a handful of people there. And finally we had to let Tommy know we were just going o have to cancel all events we were planning to do.

He still got presents including some fun science stuff and planet stuff. He got to help make and decorate his cake (with a lot of sprinkles). We did some of the fun activities we were planning on doing at his party with balloon propelled cars. Although one of the balloon propelled cars was very difficult to get to work. It was more of an experiment to see how to build a car and weight and friction ect. It took a lot of tries to get it to move, and we did get it to go the length of the room a couple times that of course were not the ones I got on video. But I also got a simple version that worked every time so the boys had lots of fun with those. And he also checked out some of his planet presents that he got.

We also had a little virtual birthday for him through zoom. We played virtual Pictionary and then sang Happy Birthday.
