Today was Tommy's Ice Cream Social at school so kids could go in and see their new classroom and tour around the school again before school starts. It went pretty well. Tommy liked the playground and the slider that they had in the Kindergarten playground. He liked his room but didn't really want to sit still and really check things out there. So we toured the rest of the school again. We made the mistake of going out to the older kids playground. It was going fine until Tommy decided to jump off the very top of the highest point of the playground and clapped his knees together. That put and end to the ice cream social.

Too Hot...Had to Go to the Beach
Feeling hot and you just can't bare it. Just drive 6 minutes from you house to cool off at the beach. And Tommy caught his first fish under the bridge with his little net all by himself. Hours of entertainment while I relax in my beach chair.

Eric has been fishing lately and getting some pinks. I haven't gotten to go yet. But tonight they are having a BBQ down at our fishing hole. So we all headed down there. I got to fish a little bit but there we no bites on the night. But we got to eat some good food and take in an amazing view.

Tommy's Preschool Graduation
Tommy had his preschool graduation yesterday. He is so excited for kindergarten to start. He keeps asking me when the bus is going to show up. Thanks little islanders for your patience with this wild and wacky little boy.

Ocean
Another great year down at Long Beach again. This year we brought cousin Ruby with us. She is such an outdoors girl she had a great time playing on the beach and looking for every critter she could find.
The beach had changed a bit this year and the tide pools that were there last year where huge this year. And they stayed pretty warm. The kids loved playing in the tide pools. Tom even got brave enough to get out there and play in them. But he still wouldn't get close to the waves. I did manage to get him near the water line once when the waves were super calm. He didn't want to get any closer than the very edge of where the sand got wet. Maybe some day :)
This year we had to make some sort of a three headed octopus monster when we buried the kids because we had 3 volunteers. We thought Jake might join in too but he decided not to at the last minute. Not our best sand sculpture but I was not sure that all three kids were going to sit still for very long. Especially Tom who had never done it before. But they made it long enough to get pictures.
The kids played in the dunes, did kites and had a great time. They went in the hot tub this year. Even Tom who freaked out last time I tried that. But I think he is more comfortable after swim lessons. And Jake went in too. The kids also had slumber parties in the same kids room this year and somewhat kept themselves busy in the house compared to previous years. They even got to hang out with all of Jerry's grandkids for a little bit. It was great to see all of those guys. We at a lot of great food and had a lot of good family time.
We went back to the arcade and the rides again this year. There were a few more open this year. The bumper cars were a huge hit. And Tommy was even brave enough to ride the tea cup type spinning ride with me. We took it somewhat slow though. Then we hit the arcade and everyone had a blast. To top it off we went and got ice cream.
We got a couple bonfires in as well. We let the kids take the light sabers down to the beach to play with. They had fun and we could always tell where they were out in the dark :) And on our way home from the bonfire one night the stars came out and were amazing. Ruby didn't want to go to bed because I took out my star map on my phone and she was checking out the planets. I sat in the hot tub and stared at the stars until the clouds reappeared.
Wes and Zayne kept me from getting much sleep with all the board games they brought. The night they wanted to play risk I was literally sleeping on the job and somehow managed to run the board before I gave away my countries because I just couldn't stay awake any longer.
The eclipse happened to line up with our vacation. We had tossed out ideas of driving all the way into Oregon to see the full eclipse. But word of traffic was that it was going to be horrible. And it was a 3 hour drive to get to the full eclipse range. We decided we would wake up early and check the weather to see if there was going to be cloud cover and drive as far as we needed to to get out of it. Not everyone decided to go. Some stayed out the house. We only had to drive as far as Astoria and the cloud cover was gone. So we looked around for a park. We happened to find a little park. Of course as soon as we find a place to watch we get word that there was no longer any clouds back at the house. Figures. But the park was cool and the kids had a good time. There was a little swing set and some picnic tables, but really the kids enjoyed playing in the trees. There were lots of birds hanging out. I tried to chase a few down but couldn't quite tell what they were. We hung out and waited and then the eclipse started to happen. Not much at first. But then we started to see some weird stuff. It looked hazy out and the shadows seemed weird. The the birds started to get quiet. And the dandelions started to close up. And the temperature seemed to drop a little. The sun got down to a little sliver for just a moment as we were at 98% covered range. And then everything started to brighten up, the dandelions started to open and the birds began to chirp again.
It was a good time had by all. On our way out of town we went by the kite festival. We got all the kids tiny little snails with heads that move so they can remember the little snails that they found.
