High School Home Meet

The Rockbusters went to the Vashon High School dual meet tonight to see how the big boys do it. They even got to do a little warm up on the mat under the spotlight. They are all pumped up for their tournament tomorrow.

Practice, Practice, Practice

Tommy is working on the short vowel sounds at school and putting it in words. So we practiced at home.

Bird, Mushroom & Salmon Hunt

The boys and I went on a bird, mushroom and salmon hunt today. We started at Fisher Pond. There were lots of ducks on the pond today. The lighting was spectacular to look at. But not the greatest to photograph or identify birds. We did see a heron and a Pileated Woodpecker though. When we weren't looking for birds we were searching for mushrooms. The boys really loved doing that. There were tons so they were easy to spot. And there were lots of different shapes and sizes. After we walked around the pond we went down to Shinglemill Creek to see if there were still any salmon trying to spawn. I hadn't really tried going there before so I wasn't sure how this was going to go. But it was literally right on the side of the road where you could go look for salmon. We looked for a little bit and then Tom, Jake and I decided to walk down to Fern Cove which didn't look very far. Eric stayed at the bridge at the top of the trail. It was only a 5 minute walk to Fern Cove and there were a lot of birds down there. Mostly seagulls from what I could see. But there was a heron and some ducks as well. And the boys could really see how strong the current was shooting out into the sound from the creek above. I explained to them this was what made it so difficult and exhausting for the salmon to make it up the creek. Then of course Eric comes down and said he saw a salmon swimming up the creek. We tried to go look but had no luck. Figures. But at least he got a video of it.

Fourth Wrestling Tournament

The boys had another wrestling tournament today. Jake had his first win! Tommy had a rough day as he was placed in a really tough group but he really tried hard. And they both had fun.

Thanksgiving

Tommy had a half day on Wednesday so I cut out of work early. I asked the boys what they wanted to do with our free time out of school. They wanted to make more paper turkeys. I also had some feathers lying around so we made a bunch of hand turkeys with feathers on them while I prepped our Thanksgiving dinner for the next day.

On Thanksgiving we went over to my Mom's for lunch. Wes was there too. He had to work retail at Best Buy Thanksgiving day at 6 PM so we had a short visit together. My Mom was working retail in the morning so she wanted to get to bed early. So after lunch we went home and had our Thanksgiving dinner. I made a 3 lb turkey breast and most of the fixings. The gravy just wasn't the same without all the drippings but it ate up OK.

I was a little sad for the boys that they didn't get to have a holiday like those of my youth with a house packed full of people and tons of cousins to play with. I really missed Grandma and Grandpa today.

Pig in a Blanket

Tom was messing around with his blankets and decided to roll himself up like a pig in a blanket. He thought it was so cool he insisted on sleeping on the floor this way tonight.

Sole Certificate Reward

Tommy got a Sole Certificate on Monday. This is a school recognition of him being caring and helpful to others. Even though he has had bumps in the road at school this is a big deal so I took him for a reward. After he got out early from his half day at school we had about an hour before we needed to pick up Jake. So I took him to the Burton Bike track again.

Adventure Day

We got back pretty early from the wrestling tournament. Before we even made it to the ferry the boys were asking me what we were going to do next. They asked if we could go on a beach walk. So we stopped at a couple different places. Hunted for birds. Threw some rocks. And got a little energy out. How did they still have energy after a wrestling tournament. Who knows. But it was a beautiful day to be outside.

Third Wrestling Tournament

The boys had their third wrestling tournament. It was an exhibition tournament where people picked a partner and waited in line to get on the mat. So needless to say it was pretty chaotic. But the boys got some more experience. We stayed in the line for 2 hours so that we could get 3 matches for Tom and Jake got 4. Even though it was exhausting at least it was over fast. Jake actually improved a bit. They didn't keep score on his matches but I think if they had he might have even won one match. Tommy was mostly wrestling kids that were bigger and older than him, but he didn't complain. He just tried his hardest.

Family Band

Tommy asked me if we could start a family band. Here they are practicing.

Lena's Birthday

The family got together to celebrate Lena's birthday. She mad the cake and caramel frosting himself. It tasked great. And of course we played Pictionary.

Burton Dirt Bike Park

Tommy has gotten pretty good a biking now. At least good enough that I thought it would be fun to take him to the Burton Dirt Bike Track. I had wanted to take him for a few weeks, but I told him he had to earn it by being a good boy. He hasn't been perfect, but he had a better than most. So we took him down there and he loved it. It will for sure be something we will do for a reward again in the future.

Worms, Worms & More Worms

Tom started tracing some things on his chalk board. It started with a hand turkey. Then he started tracing stuffies. He was doing pretty good. Then he made one tracing of his worm stuffie. And that turned into a whole bunch of worms. He was very proud of himself.

Second Wrestling Tournament

The boys had their second wrestling tournament today. Jake had fun, but no wins today. And he was a little sad about it. Tommy surprised the heck out of me today and had 2 pins. He was sorted into a group that was more at his level and he did really well. He was super excited about it.

Harvesting Carrots

I did a little cleanup in the vegetable garden today. Or I should say the potted garden. There was only one thing left to harvest. Carrots. I had the boys come help me. They also helped me scrub them up in the sink. They love their carrots.

First Wrestling Tournament

The boys had their first wrestling tournament today. They have only had a couple weeks of practice so they are really still figuring it out. There are lots of rules, not to mention the technique. So there were no Bingham wins today. But they did both each score a point. And they both had fun on the mat. Jake was not the happiest camper sitting in the stands all day, but hopefully he will learn to like or at least tolerate that part. Tom didn't seem to mind. He found a cardboard box to keep him busy for most of the day :) It is quite a production to run a tournament so thanks to all those people who work hard to organize it all.
