Today we set up a booth to sell kindling. We did pretty well. Tommy has chopped more kindling. But Jake had to do more time selling today as Tommy was at practice. So they are both helping out to do their part. We still have a ton of kindling left.
What an Amazing night to get to witness at the ballpark. In 2001, my mom and I were lucky enough to have picked a random game near the end of the season the ended up being a historic Mariners game. It was the first day back to baseball after the week long break from 9-11. It was also the day the Mariners clinched the AL West Championship. The team walked around with the flag. We felt very lucky to have been at that game to witness it first hand.
As the Mariners were approaching the end of the season, I wanted to take the boys to one last game. I wasn't sure at the time they would really be clinching a playoff spot although it was close enough to the end of the season I knew it was possible. I also wanted to see if we could be there when Cal hit one of his last home runs for the season. As we were about 10 days out from the end of the season I looked at the schedule. The last series of the season with the Dodgers was super expense and close to sold out. No doubt with Clayton Kershaw's last game being the last day. Then I looked at the series before that and it was the Rockies. Since they were the worst team in baseball I thought there may be a good chance to see a Cal homerun. I bought some cheap seats in Left field for $25 a seat. We picked Wednesday as that is the day no one has soccer practice.
Little did we know we would be witnessing another historic Mariners game. After steam rolling the Houston Astros in Houston over the weekend, we started looking closer a the magic number. And we figured we may have a good chance at seeing them clinch. The night before they beat the Rockies and solidified a playoff position. And now on the day we are headed to the ballpark, they had a chance to clinch the AL West for the first time since 2001, when I just happened to pick a random game to go see.
I made an extra sign for the game. Cal had 58 home runs going into this game. I temporarily converted our JP sign into numbers in case Cal had a home run. Here we are in the first inning. I hadn't even got the sign ready yet and untied from our bag. And Cal hit number 59. And then the home runs just started flying like crazy. I had a feeling this game against the Rockies might be a good show. And then in the 8th Cal hit number 60. The place was shaking like crazy, which you can really feel from the left field bleachers.
We were way ahead by the finish, but the crowd was hanging on the last pitch. And then we hung around to watch the party. What an exciting night. And little did we know that would actually be Cal's last home run of the regular season. I don't know if the boys really understood how historic of a game they got to see on a Wednesday night were they got little sleep before going to school the next day. But years from now when people are still talking about this game, I am sure they will understand how cool it was.
Apple press day. I can't say it is a super relaxing event. Lots of work. There was good food though. And we took some of the cider and marinated some ribs. Then I cooked the cider marinade to make a BBQ sauce. It was really good.
Still keeping our insurance company happy. We cleaned out the shed to show them the structure. We cleared away a bunch of branches. Finally got approval from the insurance company so we don't have to tear down another shed. Now to organize all the junk and maybe get rid of some.
First Day of 6th and 8th grade. Both are now in middle school. I got their schedules and next semester they have an elective class together. We'll see how that goes. Off to another year of school.
We stayed home for Labor Day weekend. But we figured we better do something to get out there and enjoy the last of summer. So we did some kayaking around the inner harbor. This time we took the boys past all the homes on Quartermaster so they could see how all the rich people live. Lots of private docks. And one floating dock covered in seals.
