Tom's First Birthday
On Tom's actual first birthday we didn't do much. But he did get a big surprise. It snowed. He has seen snow on the ground before, but he has never seen it actually snowing. He loved it.
On Saturday we had his first birthday party. Since his favorite thing these days are balloons we decided to go all out on the decorations. I did something that I don't know that I will do again. I put up all the decorations while he was sleeping. So that when he woke up he was surprised. He loved it, but it was a little stressful to me to get it done so fast. We went with a Thomas the train theme.
I figured we might as well do it while he is young and use up all the decorations till he is too old and is sick of it. Eric and I decided to by him Lego's for his birthday since he likes building stuff. Or at least tearing stuff down :) So I made him a little train station out of the Lego's. We had also found a remote control train set at Christmas time at Granny's for $15. We haven't had it out since it is for older kids, but we brought it out for the party. I made that train and one other little train he has run through the train station. When he came downstairs I pressed the button to start it up and make noise and he thought that was pretty cool. He was very surprised and excited.
Tom had a great time at the party. He got to see a lot of people he hasn't seen in a while. He was a rock star the whole time. He was in such a good mood. He ate a ton of hamburger. So much I had to keep him from shoving it in his mouth all at the same time. He also at the entire piece of birthday cake. I thought maybe he would just lick some frosting off the top or something. Oh no. He picked up the entire thing and tried to shove it in his mouth at once. So I crumbled it up for him and he just kept eating until it was all gone. I was amazed that how much he ate. Thanks for making the cake Mace!
At the end of the day Tom had a great time and at the end of the day he totally crashed. Thank you to everyone who was there. And thank you for the presents. I tried to keep track of which presents came from which people, but since Lena and Taylor were both helping me open presents at the same time I lost track a bit.
But Tom has been playing with his new stuff, reading his new books, wearing his new clothes and loving it all. Thank you everyone for making it a special day.

1 Year Old
Hard to believe it has already been a year. But it is true, Tom is 1 year old today.
Tom is walking all over the place now. He does what I call zombie walking, where he holds his hands out straight in from of him. It is pretty cute. He has also mastered standing up without holding on to anything. I took a lot of energy for him to figure it out at first.
He has also really got into dancing this month. He hears music and he shakes his head and sort of makes a singing noise, rocks back and forth or jumps up and down. We also dance together and he really likes that. Especially when I dip him.
He has really expanded on his foods this month. He is now almost doing all finger food now. He loves feeding himself. He also now likes to point at our plates and grunt saying I want some. So we have started trying to give him some of what we eat if it is something he can eat. He is such a fast and greedy eater that I have to slow him down. Sometimes he shoves so much in his mouth at once that he can barely even chew. I just know that I am going to have to buy another fridge just to store all the food this kid will need by the time he is a teenager.
He has picked up a little bit more on communicating. He now says "Yeah" or "Yes" which he says all the time. He also does a roar for lion. He also knows the signs and words for diaper, eat and bottle now. He can sometimes sort of sign them back to me. Still working on it. He also is exercising his vocals a lot with screeching. It is nice to know what he is thinking some times, although we are on a pretty regular schedule so I can usually guess what he wants just by what time it is.
Tom is so playful these days. He likes to listen to the telephone and giggle back. He also likes to look at his picture after you take it on the camera screen. He also likes to pull out his books and look through the pictures. He has started stacking blocks on each other instead of just knocking them down.
Tom got to spend a little bit of time outside this month. He also got to try out his swing which he seems to like.
And I am sure that you can tell from the pictures this month that one of his favorite things right now are balloons. We signed up for the Toys "R" Us Birthday Club. They sent him a $5 gift certificate and a birthday card in the mail saying that he would get more stuff if he came in store. So we went to the store. They gave him a balloon and a crown, announced his birthday over the PA system, and even had a worker serenade him. He got to look at lots of toys and he had a fun day.

Here is a look back at Tom's first year. This year has been so busy. It is so weird to finally stop and reflect on the last year and look back at the pictures.
