Tommy the Lumberjack

Tommy loves playing lumberjack. We needed to take down a fir that was getting a little too large for my liking a little too close to the house. I wanted to bring it down before it was too big to do on our own. So I let Tommy do a bunch of hacking away at it so that he would help out.

Wrestling Home Meet Against Cascade Christian

Tonight was wrestling senior night against Cascade Christian. Tommy had a great 1st round pin. And Lena had two 1st round pins for her last home wrestling meet. It was a great night.

Tommy at Emerald Ridge Tournament

Tommy wrestled at Emerald Ridge today. They had a split Varsity and JV tournament. He wrestled JV. There were only 4 people in his weight class. So it was a round robin tournament. Tommy won on decision, then with a pin, and wrapped it up with a tech pin. Pretty good day for him.

Rockbusters Home Meet

Jake had a home Rockbuster wrestling meet. He was in a bit of a tough group that was bigger than him. But he did the best he could with it. He has been super excited to do as much wrestling as he can this year.

Northern Lights

The northern lights were being seen around the world in a large solar storm. I waited and waited yesterday. I was seeing nothing. Then as it started to get late in the nigh it was getting foggy. So I went to bed. Apparently between 2-4 AM it was amazing. But I missed it. They said there would be a chance again tonight. I kept checking every 20 minutes. I told the boys I was heading out there right at about their bed time. I told them to get on shoes and follow me out. I get out there and I see colors shining. I took a quick blurry picture and ran in to get them. When they got out there it was already dimmer and just kept fading. We saw it a little, but not the huge show I was hoping for. But it was fun to see it for a flash.

Tom & Jake at South Kitsap HS

Jake had his first wrestling tournament of the year. Since Tommy was available they had him wrestle too in the middle school division. Tommy met some tough competition, but did get 1 win on the day. Jake had a good day. He started off with two wins. And since it was an 8 man bracket that put him in the final. He lost his final. And unfortunately he had to turn right back around and do the stupid true second match. He was up 9-0 and sadly got stuck in a pin. He was pretty bummed he lost that last match. He collected his 3rd place medal, but wasn't happy about it. That's OK though. He got some good wrestling in.

Home Wrestling Meet Against Klahowya

Tommy had his first home wrestling meet tonight. He recently wrestled a junior and a senior from Klahowya at 113. So we weren't sure which one he would get. He had lost to the senior on points and was pinned by the junior. So we were hoping for the senior. But he ended up with the junior. He tried hard and made it longer than the last time he faced him. Lena pinned her opponent to finish out the night.

Making the Big Bucks

The boys had been selling their kindling to individuals, slowly as they were able to connect with people who needed kindling. Well they just made a very large sale. They sold 20 bags to the grocery store who had run out of kindling. And after the grocery store ran out of about half of that they sold another 20 bags. Their kindling they had prepared is now gone and they will have to start chopping again.

Tommy Soccer Awards Ceremony

Tommy's soccer team won their league this year. As did the Vashon team a year below him. The winners of the leagues were invited to go to a Tacoma Stars game at the ShoWare Center. We sent him with a teammate as we were just there last weekend for wrestling. I am told they had a great time, and saw a double over time shoot out. The Tacoma Stars won.

Lena Wrestling at Braided

After Tommy was out of the tournament, we decided to race down to Kelso to see Lena wrestle at Braided. We were already half way there. We just missed her semi final match by about 10 minutes unfortunately. But we did get to see her final. And an amazing final it was. This was the same opponent she met at the semi final at Gut Check. Lena has a very different wrestling style than her. She does take downs and is very good at double legs. Last weekend, the girl got her in a few double legs and then released her so she could get another one. It was obviously her strategy. But seeing some of her matches online you could also tell her skills down on the mat were a weakness. Last week after getting taken down a few times by her she did the PL twist on her and then pretty easily to a pin after she got her down. I think this match they both knew what each others wrestling style was like and we changing their attack plan. They spent quite a bit of time locked up in the neutral position. Her opponent did get a couple take downs on her and then released her. With about 30 seconds left Lena had to make a bold move. She tried and it didn't work. So she had to power through her and did. Lena is much better than this girl when down on the mat. And quickly got her on her back and with 4 seconds left pinned her. This girl is ranked number on in the state for her weight and school classification. She is also ranked 28th in the nation because she wrestles nationally. Well done Lena.

Tommy Wrestling at Rainier

Tommy had another wrestling tournament this week. There were a couple teams that he had seen before. But also some new ones. He first faced a freshman. It started a bit rough as he lost a point before the first whistle. He did not have his headgear snaped before he went to the table. I didn't know that was a thing. But I guess it is. There was a bit of back and forth in his first match and then he pulled out a second round pin. His next match was against another freshman. However, far more advanced. He is a club wrestler for mad dogs and placed 4th at youth state last year. Tommy was pinned by him in the first round. Tommy was then supposed to have a consolation match but it was forfeited. His last match was versus a senior. He really battled and went the distance, but lost on points. He never gives up till the end though. He ended up earning 7 team points. So that is pretty cool.

Lena Wrestling at Gut Check

The boys and I went to go watch Lena at the ShoWare Center in Kent. This was a tournament for higher level wrestlers. It was a great place to watch wrestling. And we saw some great matches. Lena did great. She even put a new move into her repertoire and executed it right when she needed it in the semi final. She went on to the final where her opponent was not able to finish the match due to an injury. It was a bit hard to watch and a little bitter sweet. But Lena did great and went home with a belt.
